About Jay and His XPL
I make a living designing primarily for interactive/screen communications. Throughout my career I have designed many web sites, typefaces and identities. Some of which are awarded and published locally and nationally, some not so much. Most recently, I was awarded inclusion in the AIGA National Design Archives for the second time in four years, a National Addy award and received my 5th Webby Honoree in 4 consecutive years.
I am currently the Interactive Associate Creative Director at TOKY Branding + Design in the flyover city I love — Saint Louis, Missouri.
I’ve now entered my 30’s with my legendary wife Dawn and my viciously protective German-Shepard mix, Cooper. I spend a lot of my free time on my letterpress, with my Holga or traveling with my wife.
What is JDXPL?
JD = Jay David. XPL = Explosion. When I first launched my presence on the internet in 1997, I called my site “The Jay David Web Page Explosion” after my then obsession with The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the album Orange, over the years it’s dwindled down to just XPL. This site once housed almost weekly full-site updates of my work/type/experiments and a lot of my professional work. Now I keep it simple and try to post just information related to what I’m up to.
A few influential people and events throughout my design career thus far:
Picking up Raygun #18 while working overnight as a cashier at Schnucks, 1996.
An unhealthy obsession with Chank.com, 1997.
Starting the Design Posse with Anthony Palacios and being involved with the Swankarmy network of young designers, 1997-98.
Developing typefaces/sites with Bradford Cox (Sound of Print) and Harsh Patel (final.nu), 1997-2001.
Working with the people at TOKY Branding + Design 1999-Present.
